Sunday Email News (Nov 28th- Dec 3rd)

Happy Sunday Mighty Hawk Band!

I hope that everyone had a restful Thanksgiving break and got spend some well-deserved quality time with their families and friends.

We have quite a few celebrations this week. Let’s start by congratulating Julian Shannon and Jonathan Shier for being selected to the 2017 TMEA All State Jazz Ensemble! Julian Placed 2nd overall out of the entire State on Bass Trombone and Jonathan Placed 4th overall out of the entire State on Trumpet. Both Julian and Jonathan will represent Birdville High School as they travel to San Antonio this February to perform with the All State Jazz Ensemble at the Texas Music Educators Association Conference. This is the Highest Honor Possible for a High School Jazz Musician in the State of Texas. Way to go guys!

Next I’d like to congratulate all of the students who auditioned for the TMEA All Region 31 Orchestra. We had our best showing ever at the Orchestra audition placing four of the twelve auditioning students in the Orchestra. Those students are

·         Jackson Boyd – 1st overall on Tuba – Advanced to Area

·         Julian Shannon – 1st overall on Bass Trombone

·         Cole Kirchenbauer – 2nd overall Bassoon – Advanced to Area

·         Jonathan Shier – 4th overall on Trumpet

Honorable Mention

·         Jordan Proffer – 7th overall 1st Alternate on Percussion

·         Kevin Arce – 3rd overall 2nd Alternate on Tuba

Lastly, we had an incredible TMEA All Region 31 Jazz Band Clinic and Concert right before the Thanksgiving break. We had 11 students representing Birdville High School in the Region Jazz Bands and every one of them did an incredible job. It was a great concert and the clinicians had nothing but great things to say about our students. Way to go guys!

Annual Mighty Hawk Band Canned Food Drive – Each year the Mighty Hawk Band puts on a canned food drive to help families in need in BISD through the Christmas Providers Food Bank Program. To make things “interesting” the Band / Class that collects the most canned items will receive a doughnut party compliments of Mr. Cheripka. All canned good items are due by 12:00pm on Wednesday of this week. The final count will happen at 12:01pm. This year’s participating groups are the Wind Ensemble (reigning champions 4 years running!!!), Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Winterguard. Last year we were able to collect over 1,250 canned food items. Let’s make it happen again guys! J
