August Camp Survival Tips

Student Drop Off and Pick-Up – Please remember to drop off and pick up your kiddos at the BHS Band Hall. For traffic safety reasons, please do not drive them to the practice field or pick them up at the practice field. Upperclassmen that are driving to rehearsal, please remember that you must park in the student parking lot (not horseshoe parking lot). All students should use the new main entrance to the Band hall.  No one may use the doors near the theatre rooms.

Health  / Heat Safety – Everyone loves summer, but without precaution, our rigorous activities, the
sunshine, and heat can get the best of us. We won’t be outside for the entirety of our rehearsal days, but enough to impact your health if you’re not prepared. Failure to hydrate and eat/drink enough will impact your health negatively, often resulting in exhaustion, headache, and nausea. Avoiding  heavy greasy foods, milk or dairy products
. Drink more than you usually do and drink primarily water.  Water should be the vast majority of your liquid intake during August Camp, and not just during rehearsal times but around the clock, weekends included. Juices and Gatorade / Powerade are fine but are not substitutes for actual water.  Avoid caffeinated, sugary, and energy drinks like tea, soda, Red Bull, etc.  Be sure to bring a one gallon supply of iced water to all rehearsals and fill up your container during your lunch break.

Other ways to beat the heat-

·         Wear light colored or white t-shirts and
loose fitting clothing.  Moisture-wicking garments are optimal.

·         Wear comfortable athletic shoes and moisture-reducing socks. The cooler & drier your feet, the cooler and more comfortable you’ll be. Remember, flip flops and sandals will not work since we will be running and working out.

·         Wear a hat and sunglasses to keep the sun out of your eyes and off of your cheeks, nose, and ears.

·         Apply / re-apply sunscreen prior to outdoors rehearsal blocks.

Lunch – Our daily lunch break is from 10:30am-1:00pm. Students may leave campus for
lunch or bring a sack lunch and stay in the BHS Band Hall. Remember, lunch is not provided, but please make good eating and drinking choices.

Forms and Paper Work – All students paperwork should have been completed and turned
in over the summer months. We will be doing a final sweep on Tuesday and Wednesday to make
sure that all paperwork is turned in and completed by the end of Wednesday’s rehearsal. You should have already turned in:

·         2017 Statement of Intent signed by Parent and Student

·         May Deposit of $200

·         July Payment of $100

·         Any School owned instrument contract signed by Parent and Student

Forms that will be passed out this week

·         UIL 8 Hour Agreement Form

·         BISD Medical Form / Travel Form

All forms are available in the Band Hall. If you might have missed one at registration, please be sure to pick up a new form and turn in before the end of rehearsal on Wednesday.

Dogs N Dogs Picnic – Please join us this Friday evening at Chisholm Park in Hurst for our annual “Dogs N
Dogs” picnic. There will be free food, drinks, snacks, and of course…our K9 pets! As always there will be games played (football, soccer, ultimate frisbee, and more), fellowship, and a chance to show off your puppies. Please join us for a fun filled evening!

See you guys bright and early Tuesday morning, and remember Mighty Hawk Band 2017… Let’s make it happen!
